What I observed from her. The important stuff. 

- Always come early to meetings and social events. One is able to meet the creators, and the host. 

-Start a collection of work dresses. 

-She has one friend she tells the complete truth to. The rest know what she wants them to know. She will lie or not tell the person till months later. She censors herself. 

-She has one signature hairstyle and sticks to it. Since, she is the only black woman on the top floor, she wanted to be taken seriously and recognized instantly. She realized the women who were drastically changing their hairstyles were always the subordinates but the executives had a signature style. Example: Anna Wintour, Gloria Allred and etc. 

-She lives below her means. I know people who make $40k and lower who spend like they have her salary. She spends a lot of money on three things, jewelry, briefcases, and vacations. 

-To retain connections, she does favors or has to do favors. Knowing someone isn’t enough, if you do not benefit them, they won’t do much for you.

Vegans don’t care about people who pick crops!

Said the carnist who probably

  1. doesn’t give a shit about the lives of slaughterhouse workers: how they are usually on shitty contracts, are usually poor and people of color (PoC), how they don’t have basic working rights, and how often times they are undocumented.
  2. doesn’t give a shit about how big, rich, Western, white countries go into other countries: usually (again) poor, underprivileged, native areas that are (again) usually inhabited by PoC. This takes land away from the people in that region or country and gives it to a) the livestock and/or b) the crops raised for that livestock.
  3. doesn’t give a shit about the fact that animal product consumption is causing deforestation: there are undiscovered plants and other things in these areas that could help with medicine, not to mention that rain forests and other land contributes to 20% or so of the Earth’s oxygen. This effects not only non-human animals, but human animals as well.
  4. doesn’t give a shit about the people back in their homes: in rich, white countries like the United States who live next to these factory farms. How their water quality is shit, the air quality is shit, the soil turns to shit and how they have higher rates of ailments that don’t effect people who don’t live near factory farms. This also leads to the areas being more poverty stricken.
  5. doesn’t realize that they too (unless they fancy themselves to only live on meat, dairy, milk, honey and other animal products) eat the same exact fruits, vegetables and other plant-based foods that those same farm workers pick for a plant-based diet.

(Response to an ask about a professor stating that veganism would mean many people wouldn’t have any protein sources and that it’s okay to value some beings over others because of intelligence and personal connection. I posted this earlier but it deleted, sorry about that anon)

I’m assuming he’s talking about third world countries and the poor, but globally around 4 billion live primarily on a plant-based diet, and most people in poverty throughout the world subsist on a primarily vegetarian diet, and why across the Chinese-Japanese, Australian, Hindustani, Central Asian, Near Eastern, Mediterranean, European-Siberian, South American, North American, Central American and Mexican regions, every single staple food is vegan. If you visit any poor family in any third world country you are unlikely to see meat on the table, if at all, people get by on plant based staples the majority of the time.

People in the west tend to forget that meat is a luxury. The only reason it isn’t seen as a luxury in the western world is because we heavily subsidise it with taxpayer’s money. A full 63% of all food subsidies go to meat and dairy, compared to <1% towards fruits and vegetables. 62% of your average American farmer’s earnings come from the United States government, meaning that people pay for less than half of the real terms cost of their meat. If full ecological costs -including fossil fuel use, groundwater depletion and agricultural-chemical pollution were factored in the price of meat would double or triple. The rest is paid for in tax dollars, and this is the case in most western countries.

If he’s talking about food deserts and such then it’s a fair point, there are real issues with food availability which present significant barriers to people trying to go vegan. Statistically this is a small number though and we’re not suggesting that people who don’t have access to veganism should be forced to do so, we would instead advocate for the abolition of food subsidies on unhealthy animal products, particularly fast food, and instead subsidise healthy plant foods which are already pretty cheap, to make them affordable to all.

As for this notion that we can value some beings higher based on intelligence, this is blatantly self serving. If we applied this same notion to humans and values the lives of intelligent humans over less intelligent ones then we’d rights be called ableist and dismissed completely. Personal connection is a bit more reasonable, we tend to value the lives of our loved ones higher than strangers, but they is not an argument that we should continue to do so, it’s just a statement of how we tend to be biased towards the needs of those we know over those we don’t. It’s certainly not something we should base our morality around, it’s this exact logic and the moral exclusion of strangers which has lead the whole world to ignore atrocities committed in other lands, and the refugee crisis we’re seeing right now.

Your instincts are right, he is wrong about this one. No matter how smart you are you can still be misinformed on a particular topic, and it sounds like your professor very much is on this one. It’s likely just something he’s never really thought about in any depth or done any research on, but don’t mistake his opinion as truth just because he is well educated. We all have our blind spots and it sounds like this is just one of his.
